What is Foil Stamping?

Over the last few years I’ve noticed a huge trend in brides asking our studio for foil invitations. Gold foil, and rose gold foil in particular, have become really popular. So what is foil stamping, and why is it so popular?

What is Foil Stamping?

Foil stamping, or foil application, is a printing process where metallic colours known as foils are applied to a surface using heat. The heat causes the foil to adhere onto the surface permanently. Foils can come in almost any colour from green to pink, white, blue, red, silver, gold and more. Some foils can even come with a matt finish. If you’re really interested in this topic, you can read on and find out more about the technical process here.

Why is Foiling so Popular?

Foils are a far cry from your standard colour printing, or DIY printing at home. So why has foil printing become so popular? Well, there are a lot of benefits to printing with foils.

  • Foil printing can make your design stand out from the crowd
  • Printing with metallics creates a high end, luxe look and feel
  • Because of their metallic nature, foils are eye-catching and create beautiful effects with surrounding light
  • Foiling is a great way to make a simple design have impact
  • Metallics are versatile and fit in with any wedding style and theme
  • Foiling is both a stylish and elegant option for wedding invitations

What are the Down Sides to Printing with Foils?

With so many benefits to using foils, and of course being smitten with their good looks, are there any down sides? Well yes. The first thing you will notice is that foil printing costs substantially more than standard printing. This is because printing with the foils is a time and labour intensive process, and a custom ‘stamp’ has to be created to apply the foiling. If you are happy to spend the extra money on this luxurious type of printing, then keep in mind that it will take longer to print as well. This is not for any last minute jobs that you need whipped up overnight, so plan well ahead.
